Grass Fire

I went out for a drive last week and noticed a strange cloud off to the south. Driving across the coastal prairie, I had a good idea where I was heading.

The closer I got to the rising clouds of smoke the easier it was to figure out I was seeing a (hopefully) controlled burn in the heart of the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge

Controlled Burn

Sitting on the county road directly under the cloud of smoke, I noticed a number of groups of Sandhill Cranes feeding in the flooded fields.

After driving around to the south of the fire area I caught this shot…

Winter Burn

Then I drove back to my first location and caught this shot with the smoke reflecting off the water…

Fire In The Grasses

During the winter these clouds rising off the massive grasslands are common sights as you drive these coastal back-roads.
