Spoonbills

There is something about this shot that makes me think of Japanese watercolors.

I took this shot just minutes before the fog completely covered this group of birds. What was really strange was, it was early afternoon. I took this shot at the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge between Angleton and Freeport south of my home. It’s a favorite place over the years to spend a morning or an afternoon watching the birds. On this particular day I left home after lunch to clear skies. By the time I made it to Chocolate Bayou, the fog was settling in from the coast. It got foggier and foggier as I got closer to my destination.

Once I arrived and found this flock of Rosette Spoonbills I only had time to set up the tripod and fire off a half dozen shots before I couldn’t even make out the birds in the distance.

Smoke on Saltgrass

Every year on my birthday I take a day long road trip to take photos. Each year I spend the first part of the day at the beach and then spend some time in the National Wildlife Refuges that dot the coastal plains around here.

One of the things you see a lot of at that time of the year is smoke from the burning of the salt grass. Most of these fires are controlled burns but some are accidental. This is what one of the grass fires looks like from a dozen or so miles away…

Soaring Along

Another trip to the wildlife refuge…There is nothing quite like trying to capture a bird in flight…

Soaring

On of the things I like about living on Texas Gulf Coast is the number of raptors we have in the area all winter long. This one was caught in the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge, one of my favorite killers of day long batches of time…

Abandoned Rails

Along a county road south of where I live is an abandoned rail line…
