One day on our vacation in 2006 to Valle Crucis, North Carolina we drove up Howards Creek Road to see what we could find. Once we reached the top of the mountain this field captured all of our imaginations…What a sight it must be in winter covered with snow, swept by the winds that blow across the peaks of these mountains.

We have spent several vacations staying up on Nettle’s Knob above Foscoe, North Carolina. We have stayed in different rental properties each time and enjoyed the drive ”home” at the end of a day of sightseeing. This little bit of a waterfall graces the creek that follows the road down from the top of the mountain. Every trip I would threaten to stop and take a picture…Until I finally did. It is still one of my favorite shots from our first trip up that mountain…

When I first saw this old mill dam in 2004, I really wanted to take a shot. But the road past was narrow with no place to pull over. There were no trespassing signs posted everywhere. So I didn’t stop.
The next time we were in the mountains, the water level was so low that there was no water running over the dam. It wasn’t until our trip in November of 2007 that I was able to capture a shot. The weather was overcast and rainy, fall was already gone from most of the trees. But the image (with just a little tweaking from photoshop) worked for me.
It has a real old tintype look and feel that I really like here.

On our second trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains, this was the view as I had my morning coffee…Oh, to be there still.

One of the things that first attracted me to Valle Crucis, North Carolina was the story that went with this general store. On every trip we make to the high country, we have to stop (on what sometimes seems like a daily basis) for my wife to do some shopping.
