An Abundance of Hummingbirds

Each year come September my backyard takes on a magical feeling as hundreds of hummingbirds pile in waiting for conditions to get just right to cross the Gulf of Mexico for the winter…

This year we have eight feeders across the back of our house. At times they have each had at least six birds on each feeder.  Each day for the last week we have burned through more sugar water. I would estimate we are approaching twelve cups per day now…

From sunup till sundown, in sunshine and pouring rain, they come and go. Fighting with each other over who takes precedence at the feeder. Sometimes one little bird will bully off all comers, sometimes as many as twelve birds will crowd around each feeder. The backyard is buzzing with action (literally) as they chase each other around the yard and over the house.

There are two feeders on the front porch, but, most of the action happens out back with only a token visit to the front.

And in a couple of weeks, after a cool front blows through, we will be left with just a few birds who will hang around for the winter. At that time all but two feeders will come down and be cleaned and stored away till next August when once again we start adding them back one at a time…
